#BLOGTOBER + #WRITE31DAYS
Wednesday, October 7 :: Take the night off and grab a guest post. Show off your favorite friend's writing.
My gal pal, Meranda, typed up this blog post for me early this year and I have just been waiting for the opportunity to showcase it. Hope you enjoy!
Last summer, my husband and I experienced the major inconvenience of a house fire. I’m blessed to be able to think of it as a major inconvenience and not a devastating loss, because though we did lose all of our property, no one was hurt and the rest of it is just stuff. Life goes on and thank God for insurance.
So, after ten months of remodels and rebuilding, we are finally able to move back into our house next weekend. I took the opportunity to make our house feel more like our home by sprucing up the landscaping.
Last year, we tore out the old bushes that were there and were left with this eyesore of a gravel-dirt patch to welcome our guests. I’m sure the contractors appreciated the mess and not having to tiptoe around landscaping – but I bet our neighbors did not.
So – I set off for Home Depot with a few pinned beginner landscaping blogs in my back pocket to gather supplies. Namely a hoe and heavy duty rake to get the ground tilled up. This was by far the worst part.
Once that was finished, back to HD I went in search of more supplies. I know what you’re asking yourself – why not buy everything in one fell swoop and save time/gas/aggravation of fighting holiday weekend traffic? Because I know myself and knew that if I had all of my supplies, then I would get frustrated after digging through rocky soil for two hours and skip straight to the fun part without laying the foundation first. My lack of self-control contributed to my multiple shopping trips.
Finally – the fun shopping trip! I had to really restrain myself from buying too many plants and reminding myself that, while they are small now, plants grow and will fill the blank spaces eventually. I opted for perennials that were easy to grow and classic colors – Patriot Hostas and White Out Hydrangeas. Classic cedar mulch rounded out my look.
I laid out the mulch and placed my plants to see where I wanted them for spacing. Measure twice, dig once, right?
And then the digging and final product! Our house is that much closer to the ‘BIG REVEAL’ next week!
