Shop Small :: Splendid Expressions

Thank you, Splendid Expressions, for sponsoring this post, part of the 2017 Shop Small Spring series. I was selected for this opportunity by Splendid Expressions; the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Shop Small

I am finally getting to some great finishing touches around the house. It has been a long two years since we have purchase our own fixer upper, and so much has changed. We have painted ceilings, ripped up flooring, installed hard wood and carpet, changed out light fixtures, and more. The list seems to go on forever. As we start to move outside to begin renovating our landscaping and garage, I am slowly but surely adding things to our walls to make our house feel more like a home.

We have plaster walls, so any hole that I put into them must be a long, long time. Plaster does not cover up just quite like sheetrock, and hostly, I can see every dot where previous owners have hung things throughout the years. I have been very particular because of this. I want our home to feel warm with words of positivity throughout. Something that shows out guests a bit of our family's philosophy of life and something that includes concepts like adventure, grace, humbleness, happiness, hospitality, and the heart to learn something new.

When I stumbled upon Splendid Expressions, I knew exactly where her signs would fit perfectly in our home. We live in a home with 2 1/2 baths; however, because of how they are placed within the layout of the house, our upstairs main bathroom gets used the most by us and our guests. We give Ollie baths in it every night and as he grows, this will become the place that he gets ready for in the morning before school and the place that he winds down before bed. So putting these messages on the wall was perfect ::

Today is a good day for a good day. Today choose joy.

Both are messages of making decisions to be positive. Both are words of encouragement. Both also happen to be adorable and match my decor perfectly. 🙂 So they are definitely winners.

Here is a little bit more about Nicole, the owner of Splendid Expressions:

How did you get your shop started?
It's funny but if you would have asked me 3 years ago, if this is where I would be in my career path, it wouldn't be owning an Etsy shop! I started 4 years ago by just helping my sister in law with her shop making Wedding signs. She went on maternity leave and asked me to take over for 4 months. I loved it so much that I went out and bought my own supplies and started making myself some items for my home. Friends and family started asking me to make décor for them and before I knew it...I had enough items to start my own Etsy shop.

What is the hardest part of owning a shop?
For me would be the financial part of it. Thank the Lord my husband is great with numbers because I never have been. He keeps me on track.

What is one thing unique about you?
Hmmmm... Well, I actually received a scholarship to the Academy of Arts College. I didn't accept the opportunity and maybe this is just God's way of putting art in my life.

What is the best part of owning a shop?
Creativity! I have always loved art and to be able to be creative and put customer's ideas together. It's a great feeling of accomplishment.

How did you get your shop name?
One night my husband and I decided to open my shop and give it a shot. Somehow Splendid Expressions just clicked.

What is one way that you keep organized?
I'm not so organized haha. People think I am but really... I just have reminders all over.

How do you balance family life and work life?
I have worked full time in the medical field until this last October. Balancing my full-time job, my Etsy shop, and being a mom and wife was no simple task these last few years. Let's just say, I didn't get much sleep or down time. But since October, I have been blessed with the opportunity to just concentrate on building my Etsy shop and spending more time with my family. It's a work in progress figuring out balance, but that's in any woman's life, working or not.

Family is huge. Without the help of my wonderful husband and parents, I wouldn't have this opportunity.

xoxo, Heather
