Halloween is one of our favorite holidays, and over the years, we’ve found some key ways to make it both fun and sensory-friendly for our daughter Lillie, who has agenesis of the corpus callosum. Here’s how we’re preparing tonight to keep Halloween comfortable and enjoyable for her! 🎃✨

1️⃣ Sensory-Friendly Costume: This year, we have three costume options that Lillie can choose from, each letting her wear her favorite pajamas underneath. This small adjustment makes a huge difference—she can enjoy dressing up without worrying about scratchy fabrics or unfamiliar textures, and it helps her stay comfortable and focused on the fun parts of her costume!

2️⃣ Routine & Social Stories: Sticking to the same Halloween route each year has become a reassuring tradition for Lillie, as she knows what to expect and where to go. In the days leading up, we look at photos from last Halloween and tell social stories based on them to help her anticipate the night. She loves hearing stories of past Halloweens, and it turns the whole process into something exciting and familiar rather than overwhelming.

3️⃣ Visual Schedule: While Lillie responds well to verbal instructions, she finds a visual schedule even more comforting, especially on eventful nights like Halloween. We lay out a simple visual schedule that she can look at throughout the evening, so she always knows what’s coming up next. It gives her reassurance and helps her stay grounded as she enjoys her night.

🍬 Treat Trails with a Twist: The treat trails here come with entertainment built-in! Performing characters add a whole new level of magic, so you’re basically getting a show with every stop. We loved the endless trick-or-treating with surprises around every corner.

🎃 The Parade is a MUST: The Halloween parade is packed with Disney magic, and finding a spot is easier here than at the busier MNSSHP! We found that catching the second parade was even better since it’s usually less crowded and frees up short lines on rides during the first.

😈 Villains Grove is Spellbinding: Do not miss Villains Grove at Redwood Creek! wait until after dark for the full effect, and take your time. The lighting, the atmosphere, and the spooky charm make it unforgettable.

🧙‍♀️ Just Enjoy the Atmosphere: This event is all about being there and taking in the sights, sounds, and Halloween vibes. Shorter lines mean more time to wander without a set agenda, which made our night feel both relaxing and packed with fun.

✨ Early Entry for the Win: Arriving at 3 pm gave us extra time to snap group photos, grab some food, and settle in before the festivities officially began at 6 pm. Starting with a full tummy kept our energy up for all the treat trails and rides to come.

🍭 End-of-Night Candy Haul: If your goal is to stock up on treats, wait until the night winds down—the treat trails are usually empty by then, and cast members hand out extra candy as a send-off! We’ll be handing some out ourselves this Halloween. 🎃

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean it’s time to take a break from swimming! Fall and winter are actually the perfect time to build essential swim skills, so our kids are confident and ready by spring break and next summer. And here’s why:

1️⃣ Year-Round Skills: Off-season practice means they’ll be ready and confident when next summer rolls around!

2️⃣ Confidence Boost: They’ve gone from cautious to confident, mastering going underwater, floating, climbing out, and jumping in.

3️⃣ Sensory Regulation: The physical activity and “heavy work” of swimming help our daughter stay regulated, especially during the quieter winter months. It’s a great way for her to get that sensory input she needs!

4️⃣ Mid-Week Fun: The kids can’t wait for Goldfish each week! Friendly staff and a family vibe make it the best part of our week.

5️⃣ Get Ahead for Spring & Summer: By practicing now, our kids are building muscle memory and water confidence they’ll carry into next year’s pool and beach days.
