Something I always wanted to do was to be my own boss. I can picture myself having a simple store front, with cute decor and fabulous design. Eclectic, rustic and adorable. I haven't decided if I would rather want to have a typical 9-5 shop or merely an office where I can make appointments and design on my downtime. I guess it would reflect directly on what I do.
A few years ago, I took it upon myself to do more of what I like, which is really anything creative. I made it a point to take more pictures, imposed myself on several opportunities of babies being born and pregnancy, and even created my own photography label, hb fotographie. As I will begin to share some of those shots soon, I also wanted to share my print design.
Etys is a lovely place for people to start their business with minimal start-up costs. Paying per month, per post, I have continue to make a profit and sell my designs. I know there is so much room to grow in this area, and really I see my photography excelling over the years beyond my print design. I have no formal training in design, photoshop, anything really. But I like it. I enjoy seeing my invitations re-pinned on Pinterest; I smile every time an order comes in. I delight in knowing that I am crafting something for that perfect shower or party for somebody else.
And as for right now, I haven't "become my own boss" enough to quit my day job or open that store front that I want someday. However, it's enough to be able to say that I control my prices, my inventory, and my customer care. I feel like that's enough and I'm proud of it.
As time went on and some other things have came my way, I feel like taking ownership on my role within my current job is seriously something to be proud of. I am an entrepreneur within my own role. I create what it should look like, what initiatives I go after, and who are my customers -- but without the stress of a steady paycheck.
Do you want to be your own boss? What does success look like for you?
